I came across a great article today that I thought I’d share for those who may be struggling with creating their first resume. I’ll summarize my takeaways, and then share the article with you. “Think of a resume as an advertisement for yourself.” This is a great way to put it, as you should have the end in mind when you set out to create a resume from scratch. Think about your life experiences and achievements and ask which are the most compelling that might want to make a prospective employer meet you.
Obviously lying and getting creative with the facts aren’t a good idea, so don’t even think of going there! You may think you’ve lived a rather mundane life to this point, with little to offer, but that isn’t likely. Sometimes you have some great experiences or qualities that you may have forgotten about, or don’t come immediately to mind. Ask your family or close friends to give you some ideas about your achievements for a resume. They may remember things you’ve overlooked.
At the end of the day, nobody gets hired based off of a resume alone. A resume is a way to get your foot in the door and get an employer to call you to setup an interview. Feel free to get creative with it, as you want something that will catch there attention. Also remember to keep it updated as time goes by. Maybe you did your resume 6 months ago but you just went on a missions trip and worked with a group to build a new school or church. This is something that should definitely be added to your resume as it shows a work ethic and the ability to work with a team.
